
Vian – In a well-played defensive game, it took until the bottom of the fifth inning for either team to get on the board. When the dust settled in the bottom of the seventh the Wolverines “Walked Off” victorious 4-2.
Neither team got a runner past second base for four and a half innings.. In the bottom of the fifth it all started with Vian’s Maisie Wells drawing a walk to start the inning. Kala Gibbins followed with a single advancing Wells to second.
After a fly out Hanna Mattingly hit an infield ground ball that forced Gibbons out at second, but a low throw got away on the double play attempt that allowed Wells to score the opening run of the game for the Wolverines.
With two outs in the top of the sixth, the Ironheads came back to take the lead when Kate Pippenger singled scoring Avery Williams to tie the game at 1 all.
The next hitter, Gabrielle Noriega, singled to left scoring Pippenger to put Eufaula on top 2-1 after six innings.
Eufaula was blanked in the top of the seventh inning and held on to the 2-1 advantage. Gibbons opened the final inning for Vian with shot to the right-center gap for a double LaKaila Drew attempted to advance the runner to third but an error put runners on first and third with no outs.
The final blow came off the bat of Hanna Mattingly with a shot to right-center that cleared the fence for a 2-run dinger that ended the game 4-2 in dramatic fashion and a Wolverine come-from-behind walk-off win.
Gibbons got the Win for Vian going 7 innings allowing 7 hits and two runs while striking out 4 Ironhead batters. Williams took the loss for Eufaula, also going the distance allowing 11 hits and striking out 7 Wolverines.
Vian will be back in action tomorrow when the travel to Central to take on the Tigers, and Eufaula will travel to Rogers State for the two day RSU Festival Friday and Saturday of this week.
