VIAN – It was a wet, rainy night in Vian, but the Wolverines didn’t let the weather dampen the Offense. The Wolverines scored early and often to come out way on top with a 51-7 win over the Diggers.
It started from the opening kick off when Wilburton mishandled the opening kick and started their opening drive from their own 10 yard line.
After a quick three-and-out, Vian took over on the Diggers 33, and 4 plays later opened the scoring on a 35-yard Masyn Wright touchdown run.
Wright added the 2-point conversion in the rain for a quick 8-0 Wolverine advantage, with eight minutes remaining in the opening period.
After another three-and-out by the Diggers, Wright went in for his second of the night on a 9-yard scamper and another 2-point conversion made it 16-0 Vian with for minutes still remaining in the first quarter.
Wilburton was still unable to move the ball and had to punt to the Wolverines who took over on their own 40 yard line.
On the first play from scrimmage, it was Wright again, this time from 60-yards out with his third touchdown run of the night, and a 24-0 Wolverine lead with 2:06 still remaining in the first.
In the early minutes of the second quarter, it was Draighton Fletcher’s turn with a 43-yard rushing touchdown after a broken tackle, to put Vian up 32-0 after he added a 2-pointer on a keeper from the 2-yard line.
With 4 minutes left in the half, it was Wright again for his fourth TD of the night on a 3-yard plunge from the three. The extra point try failed and the lead was up to 38 points at the break.
Five minutes into the third quarter Fletcher opened the scoring of the second half on a 23-yard toss into the end zone to Riley Ellis for a 44-0 Wolverine advantage with 7:20 remaining in the third period.
With 2 minutes remaining in the period Wilburton’s most productive drive of the game ended with a Ledger Folsom pick-six that went for a 60-yard score, and with the successful Cash Trammel kick the lead went to 51-0.
The Diggers finally got on the board after a Braiden Grossnicklaus 40-yard run took the ball to the Vian 2 yard line, and Jason Wilkett took it in for the score with 10:53 remaining in the game.
With a 44 point lead the game went to a running clock for the remainder of the contest and Vian moved their record to 7-1, 5-0 in district play. The Wolverines will be on the road for the remainder of the season with a game next week at Morris (1-7) and a crucial match up with Valliant (7-1) on November 6th.
