VIAN – Sequoyah traveled to Vian on Friday, for their last regular season game and after a battle through all four quarters, the Indians came out on top winning 38-35 over Vian.
The Indian defense took the field first against the Wolverines and did their job forcing Vian into a three-and-out.
The Wolverine defense didn’t let anything come easy for Sequoyah either and both teams went into the second quarter scoreless.
In the second, Sequoyah quarterback Jalen Handle would end up keeping the football and slipping into the end zone for the game’s opening score. Hudson Hendricks added the point after to put the Indians on the board 7-0.
The Wolverines added a third down touchdown run by Draighton Fletcher to tie the score at 7-7.
Aidan Armontout broke the tie with a touchdown run for the Indians to put Sequoyah back on top 13-7 after a missed extra point.
A Wolverines fumble, recovered by the Indians Kael Dobbins, led to a Handle scrambled for a Sequoyah touchdown, and Bryce Hurd got the pass for the two-point conversion putting the Indians up 21-7.
With less than 30 seconds to go in the half, Vian attempted a long pass into the end zone but was shut down when Brody Young of Sequoyah intercepted the toss to end of the half.
Vian opened the second half forcing the Indians to a three-and-out on their first possession.
“We knew at halftime they play for four quarters. They know what it takes and are going to come out in the third quarter ready to go and they were. We expected that,” Indians coach Hendricks said.
The Wolverines would get a big run in the third quarter from Wright, and a quick hand off took the football into the end zone to take the score to 21-14.
The Indians Jalen Handle located freshman Alden Jones with a pass, and he took it 60 yards for a Sequoyah score bringing the score 28-14.
The Wolverine offense responded with two scores of their own to knot the game at 28, but a huge play in the fourth quarter on fourth down by Sequoyah would see Hendricks decide not to punt and instead pass to Kael Dobbins for the first down.
On the next play Handle found receiver Brody Young with a touchdown pass and the point after by Hendricks put the Indians back on top 35-28.
The Wolverines responded quickly. They ran the kick return back to the end zone for a touchdown to tie the score.
After Vian stopped a late Indian’s drive in the fourth, Sequoyah’s Hudson Hendricks added the field goal late in the fourth ending the scoring at 38-35.
Both the Wolverines and the Indians qualified to participate in the OSSAA 2A playoffs that will begin next Friday.
