VIAN – The Wolverines are moving on to the state semifinals with a resounding victory over the Dibble Demons 42-7 Friday night
The Demons came ready to play Friday night. They scored on their opening drive, with the aid of penalties by Vian, to take a quick 7-0 lead.
Jett Norman scampered around the left side of the Wolverine’s defense for 14 yards and the game’s opening score at the 7:15 mark of the first quarter.
Just 3 plays in to the Vian opening drive, Masyn Wright broke through the Dibble line, moved to the outside and ran for a 16 yards and a Wolverines first down.
Three plays later, on third and 11, it was Wright again from the Wolverine 45, on a pass from Cash Trammel that went for 55-yards and a Vian touchdown to tie the score quickly with 4:01 left in the first quarter.
Later in the second, Trammel connected with 6 who went 65-yards for Vian’s second score and their first lead of the night at 14-7 with 4:16 remaining in the half.
With time ticking down in the half, on a fourth and 2, Dibble’s punter Tucker Skipper, who is also the quarterback, mishandled the snap and tried to get a pass to – that was broken up by Ledger Folsom and the Wolverines took over at the Dibble 23 yard line.
On Vian’s first plat Trammel ran over the right side for 13 yards and it was first and goal from the Demons 10.
On the next play it was Trammel to Wright on a pass play to inside the Dibble 1 yard line.
The Wolverines were set back by a false start call, but on the second play from the 7 yard line, with Wright behind center, a lateral to Trammel and a pass to Amos Ryan ended up in the end zone for a Wolverine score and a 21-7 advantage going to the lockers.
In a scoreless third quarter Vian’s defense stiffened even more. The Wolverines allowed just 158 yards of total offence on the night while putting up 350 yards.
Wright had 12 carries for 103 yards and a touchdown, along with 2 receptions for 61 yards and another touchdown. Draighton Fletcher contributed 88 yards on 13 carries, and Trammel was 9-for-14 for 129 yards and 3 touchdowns through the air.
The Wolverines iced the game in the final four minutes with three more touchdowns, highlighted by a pick-six from Carter Matson for the 42-7 win and a trip to the OSSAA semifinal round against Davis (10-2) December 5th at a site yet to be determined.
