CHECOTAH – The Checotah Wildcats started early and often capitalizing on Okmulgee Bulldog errors, mistakes, fumbles and interceptions.
Before the Wildcats seats were even warm they found their home team leading 36-6 before the end of the first quarter.
It all started on the first play of the game when Cole Rolland connected with Landynn Thomason for a 50-yard touchdown toss. Kicker Traegon Duvall hit the left upright on the extra point attempt and the Wildcats led 6-0 just 13 seconds into the game.
After the kick off, the first Okmulgee drive ended on a 3-and-out, and 20 punt attempt went awry on a bad snap and Checotah took over on the 13 yard line.
Two plays later Rolland took the ball to the endzone on a quarterback keeper. The kick was successful, and the Wildcats led 13-0 just over two minutes into the contest.
The Bulldogs next drive ended on a 4th and 21 on yet another bad snap, and fumble by the Bulldog punter, and Checotah took over on the 9 yard line.
The very next play led to another Wildcats score on a 9-yard touchdown pass to Tommy Calico, and Checotah led 20-0 with 7:46 still remaining in the opening quarter.
Okmulgee finally hit the scoreboard with an 80-yard kickoff return by Donte Youngblood down the left side of the field. The extra point was blocked, but the Bulldogs were on the board with 6 points.
The ensuing kick-off found the Wildcats on the Okmulgee 33 yard line after a nifty 50 yard return by Colton Burkhalter.
Checotah penalties stopped the drive and a failed 4th down conversion try gave the ball back to the Bulldogs, but their first play led to another fumble and Checotah was back on offense on their own 49 yard line.
On the next drive, it was Rolland on a quarterback keeper going 39 yards for the score, but a Wildcat penalty brought the ball back to the Checotah 37. That made it 2nd and 32 but Not to worry, just two plays later Rolland connected with Thomason again this time for a 52-yard touchdown toss, and it was 27-6 and still in the first quarter.
The Cats were not done yet. With :36 remaining in the first quarter Rolland took it in from the 3 yard line to end the quarter at 34-6 Wildcats.
In the second quarter just 2 minutes in, a 24-yard touchdown pass to Logan Crawford made it 41-6 Checotah, and after a quick Bulldog turnover the Cats scored once again to make it 48-6 on an 8-yard run by Jacob Stith.
Before the half would end the Cats added one more score on another touchdown toss to Thomason to bring the first half scoring to a close with a 54-6 Checotah lead after 24 minutes of play.
The Wildcats opened the second half with a lot of substitutes in the game to gain experience and Okmulgee took advantage scoring 22 points to the Wildcats 8, but it was way too little to late and Checotah took their home opener 62-28.
The Cats will travel to Seminole next week to take on the Chieftains, and Okmulgee will visit Mounds for a week 1 contest.
