CHECOTAH – It started as a tight penalty filled defensive battle and ended in a fourth quarter scoring flurry.
From the start of the contest yellow flags filled the field and it was one step forward and two steps back for both the Wildcats and the Dutch.
It wasn’t until 5:11 remaining in the first half when James Jones opened the scoring for Holland Hall with a 3-yard quarterback keeper through the middle of the Wildcat line, and a Connor Hutchins extra point kick made it 7-0 Dutchmen at the half.
A little over 3 minutes into the third quarter, Checotah ended a drive with a 5-yard rush up the middle by quarterback Cole Rolland after a fake hand off to Jayden Ellen to get the Wildcats on the board.
A 15 yard unsportsmanlike penalty forced the extra point try back to the 25 yard line, and Traegan Duvall went wide, but the Dutchman roughed 12 to move the ball back for a second attempt. Unfortunately for the Cats, Duvall missed a second chance kick wide left, so Checotah trailed 7-6 at the 8:40 mark of the third period.
The Dutchmen responded with a 60-yard drive that ended with a Trey Burleson to Kaysen Fredieu 12-yard touchdown toss in the left corner of the end zone to stretch the Holland Hall lead to 14-6 with 7:14 remaining in the third quarter.
Before the period would end, and after a fourth down roughing the quarterback foul on the Dutchmen, Checotah went in for a score on an 8-yard Rolland to Jayden Lake toss in the right side of the end zone, but the 2-point try failed and the Wildcats trailed by 2 points 14-12 with 1:52 remaining in the third quarter.
On the ensuing drive Rolland picked a Burleson pass and returned it to the 1 yard line and finished the drive with a dive into the end zone to give Checotah their first lead of the of the game. The Cats tacked on a 2-point conversion to bring the score to 20-14 Checotah After three periods.
In the fourth, the Wildcats would score again on a 3-yard dive by Tommy Calico to stretch the lead to 12 points 26-14.
At that point it looked like Checotah would get the “W” with just 4:35 remaining in the game, but the Dutchmen had other ideas.
A 30-yard toss from Burleson to Blayze Buchanan put the ball in the red zone, and Fredieu completed the drive with a catch for the score. A Hutchins kick made it 21-26 with just 4:04 left in the game.
An unexpected on-sides kick gave the ball back to Holland Hall 0n the Checotah 45 and the Dutchmen were in business to go for the lead.
With the clock ticking down Burleson found Mason Lilly at the 3 yard line and he went into the end zone to put Holland Hall back on top. A successful 2-point try gave the Dutchmen a 3-point, 29-26 lead with just 2:19 left on the clock.
The Wildcats 2 minute drill ended on the Dutchmen 30 with a turn over on downs and Holland Hall took the win 29-26 with the fourth quarter comeback.
Checotah (4-3) will head to Lincoln Christian to take on the undefeated 7-0 Bulldogs, and the Dutchmen (6-1) remain on the road at Muldrow (4-3) next Friday.
