The Warner Eagles held on to a small lead in the waning seconds of Thursday night’s contest to come away with the “W” over Panama 23-20.
It didn’t start well for the Eagles. The Panama Razorbacks broke out on top on the first play from scrimmage on a 54-yard run over the right side by quarterback Tyler Simkins that took the ball to Warner’s 10 yard line.
Three plays later it was Daniel Bledsoe punching it into the end zone from the 2 yard line to give the Razorback a 6-0 lead after the extra point pass was broken up by the Eagles with just 1:06 expired in the contest.
Panama added to their lead at the 4:43 mark when Caleb Brewer broke through the Warner defense for a 51-yard touchdown run. Simkins added the 2-points to put the Razorbacks up 14-0, still in the first quarter.
With 45 ticks remaining in the first Jaxson Cash took it in himself from the 1-yard line. After a fake try failed the Razorbacks were called for a face mask putting the ball at the 1-yard line for the extra try, and Cash put it across the goal line to bring the game back to one score at 14-8.
The lead would be back at two scores after Simkins to Brody Clark 26-yard touchdown toss made it 20-8 Panama.
Still in the second, Warner got closer with 3:50 left on the clock on a Lubbock Drake touchdown run, and with the Tallon Longshore extra point it was back to a one score game at 20-15.
In the second half the Eagles defense that was having difficulties earlier found their stride and held several Panama drives scoreless.
With just 3:26 remaining in the contest the Eagles finally went on top when on fourth-and-goal Memphis Swimmer pushed his way past the goal line to give Warner their first lead of the contest. A Cash to Swimmer two-point was good and the Eagles led 23-20.
Panama would put on a final push when they got the ball down to the Warner 22 yard line on 4th and 8 with :32.8 left on the clock, but they ran out of time and downs and Warner took over to ice the game.
With the win the Eagles went to 5-2 on the season and will travel to Hulbert next week to take on the Riders (1-6) while Panama (4-3) remains on the road at Haskell (3-4)
