VIAN– The Vian Wolverines held off the No. 3 Pocola Indians for a hard earned win Saturday afternoon in a hard fought battle that was never separated by more than 5 points.
The opening quarter found the Wolverines trailing by just 1 point. 9 of their 11 points in the period came in the form of 3-pointers, two of which came from Ledger Folsom and the other by Amos Wright.
For the Indians it was Jaryus Birdsong leading the way with 7 points of Pocola’s 12 in the opening session
The Table was turned in the second period with the Wolverines scoring 12 points to Pocola’s 10 to take a slim 23-22 lead.
After the break it was raining 3-pointers. Both teams put up a total of 47 points in the third quarter, 22 for the Wolverines and 25 for the Indians, and the table was turned once again, this time to Pocola’s advantage who took the lead 47-45 going into the final period.
Jeremiah Marshall was the Wolverines star in the third period hitting 4-of-5 from down town for a period total of 14 points.
Birdsong and Brayden Hardwick were tops for the Indians, Birdsong with 9, and Hardwick with 9 that included two three-pointers by Hardwick.
The lead kept changing hands in the final period, but its Vian that outlasted Pocola scoring 15 in the final session to the Indians 10 to notch the upset victory 60-52.
Top scorers for the Wolverines were Jeremiah Marshall with 20 points (6, 3-pointers), Masyn Wright with 13 and Joe O’Neal who’s three 3-pointers in the final period helped Vian to the victory.
The Indians were led by Birdsong with 22 points, Hardwick had 12, and DaQuayne Terrell with 10 points.
Pocola (12-6) will travel to Heavener to face the Wolves (8-11) Monday night before ending their regular season at Idabel.
The Wolverines (10-5) have three games next week, the first being at home vs. the Howe Lions who are 12-9 for the season.
