VIAN– The Vian Lady Wolverines pulled off their first season win by topping the Pocola Lady Indians 37-18 in front of a big crowd Saturday afternoon.
Vian was aided by the return of Halli Russell who has been out all season with an injury suffered during softball season. Russell returned to the lineup and added the spark the Lady Wolverines had been missing all season.
Russell, who had but 10 points (most from the free throw line) was instrumental in leading the offense while going 6-for-7 from the charity stripe.
Neither team could put up points in the opening period, which ended with just 7 total points and a 4-3 Vian advantage.
In the second period, the Lady Wolverines had their most productive eight minutes of the season scoring 17 points, 9 coming from the foul line. In all, Vian had 16 free throws in the period.
Pocola managed just 6 points in the entire first half mostly due to unforced errors and turnovers.
After the break the third period was another good one for the Lady Wolverines who notched another 13 points to Pocola’s 4 giving Vian it’s largest lead of the season at 34-10.
Mahiya Masterson was top scorer for the Lady Indians with 7 points, 5 coming from the foul line.
Vian (1-14) will return to the court Monday night when they host No. 2 Howe, while Pocola (3-15) remains on the road to travel to 3A Heavener.
