GORE– The Gore keep their win streak alive Friday night by defeating the Pocola Indians 37-22 on homecoming night.
After an opening exchange of punts, the Gore Pirates facing a fourth and nine faked a punt and executed a Tate Brookshire to Hunter McGee that was good for 6 points. Journey Shells topped off the scoring play with a 2 point conversion for an 8-0 Gore lead
The Pirates followed with a squib kickoff that was recovered by Shells. The drive ended with a 35-yard touchdown pass to McGee for his second of the night.
The two point try failed and the Pirates settled with a 14-0 lead after the first quarter.
With 6:45 remaining in the half Pocola quarterback Austin Hardwick scrambled in from the 11 yard line for an Indians score. The 2-point conversion was successful to bring Pocola within 6 points at 14-8.
About 3 minutes later the Pirates answered with a Brookshire to Bladin McCartney toss that was good for 6 points. The 2-point conversion was successful to bring the score to 22-10.
On the following Pocola drive Devon Mannon picked off a Hardwick pass over the middle and returned to the 10 yard line with 2 minutes remaining in the half.
With 1:07 remaining the Brookshire to McGee combination struck for their third score of the night this time from the 14 yard line. That was followed with another 2-pointer to give the Pirates a 30-8 halftime advantage.
With Gore receiving the kickoff they waisted no time advancing the ball, when on the first play from scrimmage, Brookshire took it 40 yards to the Pocola 28 yard line. He followed that with a 26-yard run breaking four tackles putting the ball at the 2 yard line.
On the following play McCartney fumbled the ball just outside the goal line turning it over to the Indians, but that drive ended when Bryon McDuffie picked off a Hardwick for the third pick of the night and returned it to the 12 with 7:42 left in the third.
Gore started their drive going backwards with two consecutive holding calls setting up a 1st down and 20 yards to go. Brookshire bailed out the Pirates with a 32 yard run on a quarterback draw play that was good for another Gore score with 5:47 left in the third quarter..
Bryon Schyktanz added the extra point kick and Gore took a commanding 37-8 lead.
The Indians got on the board again with a toss to Dakotah Terrell, a 6’8” junior who out reached the Gore defender.
The following Pirate drive ended with a punt that was returned by Terrell to the Pirate 14 yard line, but the drive stalled, and the Indians turned the ball over to Gore on the 13 yard line.
With 5:36 remaining in the half, Pocola freshman Garrett Bobst carried it in for the Indians and Hardwick tacked on the 2-point extra try to bring the Indians within 2 scores at 37-22.
That’s where the scoring ended with the Pirates taking a knee on the Pocola 4 yard line to end the game and keep Gore in the undefeated column at 6-0.
Gore’s biggest test will come next week when they travel to Central Sallisaw to take on the 6-0 Tigers in a game that could decide the district title. Pocola (3-3) will return home to take on the 4-2 Panama Razorbacks.
