GORE– The Gore Pirates held on in the late going to top the Keota Lions 47-44 in a closely contested affair at Gore Tuesday night.
After losing the lead early in the final period and trailing 38-31 with 5:48 remaining, the Pirates went on an 11-3 run to take the lead 42-41 at the 1:00 minute mark.
With just 11 ticks left on the clock the Lions were forced to foul to try to gain possession and retake the lead. Gore’s Cain Cooper went to line and sank 2-for-2 to put the Pirates ahead to stay.
Cooper and Journey Shells each had 16 points for the game, with Cooper’s points coming mostly in the final period.
Beau McKenzie was the top scorer for Keota with 18 points and Gunner Hill followed with 9 on the evening.
The Lions (10-9) will remain on the road and travel to Buffalo Valley (5-15) to take on the Buffalos Thursday night while Gore (13-9) will cross the river to challenge neighboring Webbers Falls (4-13)
