SALLISAW- The Lady Black Diamonds opened their softball season with 8-3 loss to The Checotah Lady Wildcats.
With the new softball turf not quite ready, The game was played on the new baseball field with temporary short fences.
Checotah opened the game with 2 runs in the top of the first inning generated by a double off the bat of Shaelynn Casey, but the Lady Diamonds responded with 3 of their own in the bottom of the second.
With one out in the inning Abby Webb singled home Jacie Cox to open the scoring for Sallisaw. Two batters later, a Sydney Weedon single brought home Webb, and the Lady Diamonds tied the game at 2 all.
Weedon followed with a single scoring Kelee Curson, but Natalie Gonzalez got caught in a rundown trying to score and the inning ended with a 3-2 Sallisaw lead.
All was quiet until the top of the fifth inning when the Lady Cats put up 5 runs in the inning. Sydnie West opened with a walk, and #17 singled to put two runners on.
Lexie Miller stroked a double to the gap to score West to tie the game at 3. Carly Dismukes followed with another double that scored West and a third double from Shyanne Madewell to score Miller, and the Wildcats were up 5-3.
With two outs, Dismukes scored on a wild pitch and Madewell added the fifth run of the inning via a single by Casey, to give Checotah a 7-3 lead after 5 innings.
Layna Vandiver added the final score for the Lady Cats in the top of the seventh off the bat of West to cap the scoring and give Checotah the 8-3 victory.
Vandiver and Casey led the way for Checotah with two hits each with Casey in the lead in the RBI department with three on the day.
For the Diamonds, Gonzalez and Weedon each had two hits with both notching an RBI.
Casey got the “W” for Checotah, allowing six hits and 3 runs striking out five Sallisaw hitters. Delaney Compton took the loss for Sallisaw, giving up 8 runs off 10 hits.
The Lady Black Diamonds will take to the field Tuesday when they travel to Muldrow, and the Wildcats remain on the road at Stilwell.
