KEYS – The Keys Cougars had a successful homecoming by defeating the Kansas Comets 42-21 Friday night and to even their record at 2-2
Kansas managed to get on the board first by forcing a quarterback keeper through a stubborn Cougar defense. Jaxon Haynes Forced his way across the goal line with 5:22 remaining in the opening period and 14 tacked on the extra point for a 7-0 Kansas lead.
The Cougars answered quickly with a 40-yard rush up the middle by Treveon Guthrie just a little more than one minute later. Tanner Starr tacked on the point after, and the game was tied at 7.
After the game was tied the Cougars took charge and dominated play on each side of the ball.
Guthrie led the way for Keys with 157 all purpose yards and broke the 100 yard mark with 107 yards on 10 carries.
Sophomore quarterback Ryder Davis rushed for 60 yards and threw for 117 (9 for 14) for a 90.5 passer rating.
Clint Brown and Stone Sanders each contributed a sack each for 5 yard losses.
Guthrie topped the scoring chart with 3 touchdowns on the night. Garret Lemasters crossed the goal line twice and Davis added one rushing touchdown.
The Cougars will travel to Colcord next week to take on the Hornets, and Kansas will return home to challenge the Wyandotte Bears.
