CHECOTAH – The Checotah Wildcats (4-1) waited to the last seconds to get by the Muldrow Bulldogs (4-1) on a last minute touchdown.
It all started great for the Wildcats returning the opening kick off to the Bulldogs 40 yard line, but a stiff Muldrow defense forced a turnover on downs at the 33 yard line.
On a 2nd down and 13, a Wildcat blitz got to Muldrow’s Teaguen Collins to force a fumble at the Bulldog 3 yard line.
Two plays later a fake handoff to the Wildcats top runner, Jayden Ellen, and quarterback Cole Rolland broke through the middle of the Muldrow line for a Wildcat touchdown at the 7:17 mark of the opening quarter. Kicker Traegan Duvall tacked on the extra point and Checotah too the lead 7-0.
The Bulldogs response ended at the Checotah 3 where Muldrow ran into a stiff Checotah defense and turned the ball over on downs.
The Wildcats couldn’t cash in on the turnover and were forced to punt where Muldrow took over again at the Wildcat 47 yard line.
In the second quarter Checotah found themselves in possession again late in the period. With just 1:52 remaining in the half where Rolland punched it in from the 2 yard line to give the Wildcats a 14-0 advantage going into halftime.
After receiving the second half kickoff, Muldrow drove down to the Checotah 8 yard line where Collins found DJ Massey with a 3rd down touchdown toss to get Muldrow on the board and bring the game within one score at 14-7 Checotah.
The Bulldogs went on to tie the game at the 4:31 mark of the third quarter on a quarterback keeper by Collins from the Checotah 4 yard line.
With just 7:10 remaining in the game, Muldrow’s Wyatt Prewett hit a 42-yard field goal on 4th and 20 for the Bulldogs to give them their first lead of the night at 17-14.
The Wildcats responded with a 50 yard drive that took the ball to the Muldrow 3, and on a 4th down and 4 and no time outs left, Checotah made the decision not to tie the game but go for the win with just 16 seconds remaining in the game.
On the last chance effort, Rolland scrambled to his right and found Jayden Lake in the end zone for the score and a 21-17 Wildcat win.
The Wildcats will travel to Stigler next Friday to take on the Panthers(1-4), and Muldrow will return home to challenge 2-3 Idabel.
