SALLISAW – Broque Oft came across the plate for Sallisaw’s first run of the season and the first of nine on the day in defeating the Vian Wolverines 9-2.

The Wolverines got on the board quickly in the top of the first when Dreighton Fletcher singled in Vian’s first at bat and advanced to third  with steals. With one out Riley Ellis hit a grounder to second baseman Easton Wolfe who muffed the play allowing Fletcher to score to put Vian up 1-0 after 1 inning.

In the bottom of the third the Black Diamonds quickly had two outs on a fly ball by Parker Pratt and a strikeout by Luke Pack, but the third out of the inning eluded Vian on a error by Riley Ellis.

Two consecutive singles by Braxton Lamb and Brock Streun gave Sallisaw two unearned runs, their first of the season, and put the Black Diamonds up 2-1 after three.

In the Sallisaw fourth the Wolverines again started with two quick outs, but trouble reared it’s head again with a walk to Pratt, a single to Pack, a walk to Oft and a passed ball that allowed another 2 runs to put Sallisaw on top 4-1.

The Wolverines opened the fifth with three consecutive walks to load the bases with no outs and it appeared a rally was coming for Vian.

Another walk to Cash Collins forced in a run forcing a pitcher change for Sallisaw. Dagan Grizzle relieved Coleman Wasson and Grizzle struck out Lastyn Taylor and served up a double play ball to Gabe Gilbert that ended the Vian threat.

Leading 4-2 going into the bottom of the fifth, the Black Diamonds put an exclamation mark on their offensive effort with three consecutive singles by Lamb, Streun and Cole Mayfield that eventually led to a 4-run inning and a substantial 8-2 lead after five.

The Black Diamonds totaled 11 hits led by Lamb who went 3-for-4 and the Wolverines were held to just three hits from Fletcher, Mike Polecat and Ellis.

4 ended up with the win for Sallisaw and Gabe Gilbert was tagged with the loss for the Wolverines.

Vian will return to action next Tuesday when they travel to No.1 ranked Oktaha (2-0), and the Black Diamonds (1-2) travel to Stilwell Monday afternoon.
