VIAN – On a cold, windy and yes snowy night, the Vian Wolverines dominated the Spiro Bulldogs 52-7 to move on to the second round in the 2022 OSSAA state playoff bracket.
After a punt on the Bulldogs opening series, Vian started their opening drive deep in their own territory at the 15-yard line. Just three play later Diego Ramos connected with DeSean Mays for a 57-yard touchdown. Mays finished the night with three tallies, one passing and two on the ground.
After a 3-and-out possession by Spiro, Masyn Wright broke free for a 76-yard touchdown for the Wolverines to make the score 12-0 still in the opening quarter.
With 2 minutes remaining in the 1st quarter, Ramos connected with Wright for a 20-yard touchdown toss to bring the score to 20-0 after a successful 2-point conversion.
Four minutes into the second quarter it was Mays again with a 25-yard rushing TD for the Wolverines fourth score.
The Bulldogs only score came on a strange play when Spiro’s tackle Tyson Covey stole the ball from Ramos’s hand and romped into the endzone from 27 yards out to put the Bulldogs on the board 26-7.
In the second half it was the Ramos to Jacob Brannick combination that accounted for two touchdown passes, one for 60 yards and a second from 49 yards.
After a long Spiro drive that ended on the Wolverines 5-yard line with a turnover on downs, Mays broke free on the first play by Vian for a 95-yard scamper down the right side for his third touchdown of the night.
Midway through the final period freshman Riley Ellis took over the signal calling from Ramos and ran 40 yards for Vian’s final score to cap the 52-7 Wolverines win.
Vian will take on Keifer at home in the second round. Keifer advanced by topping Vinta 42-28 in round one.
