VIAN – The Wolverines are moving on to the state quarterfinals with a resounding victory over the Keys Cougars 60-14.
It took just four plays to march 64 yards for the games first score. A 28-yard toss from Cash Trammel to Ledger Folsom put Vian on top early at the 10:34 mark of the opening period.
The Cougars response ended at the Vian 36 yard line when Ryder Davis mishandled a snap to turn the ball over to the Wolverines.
On Vian’s first play after the turnover, Masyn Wright bounced of some Cougar tacklers and took the ball down the right side of the Keys defense for a 58-yard gain to the Cougar 6 yard line.
Two plays later, Wright scampered around the right side and into the end zone for his first of the night and a 14-0 Wolverine lead, with 7:33 remaining in the first quarter.
The Cougars response was assisted by 50 yards on seven penalties by Vian and capped off with a 17-yard toss into the endzone from Davis to Benton Martin bring Keys back to within seven points 14-7.
On the first play of the second quarter, the fumble bug bit Keys when Treveon Guthrie was hit and coughed up the ball to give the Wolverines the ball at their own 37 yard line.
Just 4 plays later it was Wright again for his second of the night, on a nifty run up the middle for a 29 yard score and a 21-7 Wolverine lead.
On a fourth down play from inside their own 30, the fumble bug hit the Cougars again from the result of a hard tackle and Garrett Malaska recovered for Vian.
Just a few plays later it was Wright again on a swing pass, avoiding tacklers and getting in for his third of the night and a 28-7 Wolverines lead with 7:50 remaining in the half.
On the second play of the ensuing drive a hard Vian tackle led to Guthrie’s third fumble of the night at the keys 27 and Vian was back in business with 7:37 remaining in the half.
On the Wolverines first play of the drive, it was Dreighton Fletcher with a scamper down the left side of the Cougars defense for another Wolverine score and a 35-7 lead at the 7:31 mark.
On the next Cougar possession, it was the fourth straight turnover by Keys. This time it was an interception by Wright at the Vian 20 yard line.
On the first play of the drive Folsom went for 70 yards and Vian’s fourth score in under two minutes of the second period to make it 42-7 Wolverines.
The Cougars got a little back on an 83-yard pass from 1 to 5 when Vian’s Adoff Stahl stumbled and a wide open 5 went for the score with 1:19 remaining in the half.
At the 10:39 mark of the third, Guthrie coughed it up again for Keys, and Vian took over at the Cougar 42 yard line after the seventh turnover of the night for the Cougars.
Two minutes later it was Fletcher for his second of the night on an 8-yard run over the right side and a 48-14 Vian lead with 8:27 remaining in the third quarter.
The Wolverines went on to put up another 12 points in the fourth for the 60-14 win.
Wright led the way for Vian with 3 touchdowns and 125 yards rushing and 1 interception. Draighton Fletcher rushed for 167 yards and 2 touchdowns. Trammel was 5-for-9 passing with 4 TD passes and Carter Madsen added on late in the final period.
With the win the Wolverines will be home again next week for their quarterfinal game against Dibble. Congrats to the Cougars for making the 2025 OSSAA playoffs.
