GORE – The Gore Lady Pirates (4-1) were up against a wall in the final inning but came out unscathed to eke out a 1-run win against the Gans Grizzlies.
With no scoring in the opening inning the Grizzlies (4-6) got on the board in the bottom of the second with singles by Gabbie Price and Madi Pilkington to take a 2-0 lead.
The Pirates answered big in the bottom of the frame with singles by Peyton Curran and Hallie Brewer along with a plethora of miscues by Gans including 3 errors, 3 walks, 3 hit by pitch batters and a dropped third strike that scored Kennedy Williams to give Gore a 7-2 lead after two.
Gans responded in the fourth with doubles by Price and Maddie Freeman that brought in 4 runs to get the Grizzlies within one, 7-6.
Gans added two more in the top of the fifth to retake the lead 8-7 on a double by K’Cee Osburn and a base-clearing triple off the bat of Abagail Leach.
The error bug bit the Grizzlies again in the bottom of the sixth. Sophie O’Connor reached on an error by the Grizzlies Pilkington and scored on a double by Brewer to tie the game at eight.
Another error and a walk loaded the bases before Kendra Huckbay was hit by a pitch, scoring Brewer to put the Pirates back in the lead 9-8.
Gore put themselves in a hole in the top of the seventh by allowing a single to Pilkington and walks to Osburn and Leach to load the bases with no outs.
The play of the game came from Gore’s Huckbay with a stab of a liner to short and a toss back to third to catch Pilkington off guard for a double play.
The excitement wasn’t over. Alyiah Taylor walked to again load the bases for Gans looking for the tying run.
With the bases loaded Brighton Dorsey took the first two pitches for balls, but followed with a strike looking, a foul ball strike, and the final blow a strike swinging to end the game and give the Lady Pirates the 9-8 win.
Gans will return home to play the (1-4) Webbers Falls Warriors on Thursday, and the Lady Pirates come right back Tuesday to take on the visiting 3A Vian Wolverines (4-5)
