WARNER – The No. 5 ranked Wewoka Tigers (20-6) sent the Coalgate Wildcats (16-9) to the consolation bracket Tuesday night with a decisive 59-43 victory.
Wewoka led by just 3 points at the half 22-19 when Tigers coach DeAntrae’ Roberts unleashed a smothering full-court defense that dominated the Wildcats and outscored Coalgate by 13 points in the second half for the 59-43 victory.
Mike Piza was the top scorer for Wewoka with 13 points, all of which came in the second half. Piza hit for three 3-pointers in the third quarter.
Ladarious Woods was right behind Piza with 12 points (10 in the second half, and Bill Stephens also hit double figures for the Tigers with 10 points.
For Coalgate it was Davis Grant topping the score board 19 points 5 of which came from the free throw line where he was 5-for-5.
The Wewoka defense was so smothering in the second half the Wildcats could only manage 12 points in each of the final two periods, while the Tigers racked up 22 points in the third quarter and 15 in the final period.
With the win Wewoka remains in the winners bracket and will face host Latta Saturday night. Both the Tigers and Latta will advance to the Area portion of the tournament to be held at Checotah March 5th thru 7th.
Coalgate advances to the Area tournament, but now in a “must win” situation, against Wilburton or Ketchum as an opponent that will be determined Thursday night.
